Welcome to the 2019 WNBA season! This article will be a short breakdown of all the teams in the WNBA!
Key Additions: Brian Agler (head Coach) Arike Ogunbowale (Draft) , Isabelle Harrison , Moriah Jefferson
Key Losses: Skylar Diggins Smith (birth of child) , Liz Cambage , Karima Christmas-Kelly
The Wings look like they are tanking as they traded away Cambage for next to nothing. They just released the no. 17 overall pick in the draft, Megan Gustafson, who lead all of women’s college basketball in scoring last year. With Diggins Smith out for the year, look for Allisha Gray to pick up her scoring. Tayler Hall, who was acquired in trade last year will be another key backcourt piece for the Wings this year. Glory Johnson was resigned this offseason and will look to be a team leader this year. Kaela Davis and Azura Stevens both are returning and could be big factors for the Wings. Isbaelle Harrison is coming over in a trade and looks to be the starting center for them this year.
Los Angeles Sparks
Key Additions: Derek Fisher (head Coach) Chiney Ogwumike, Tierra Ruffin- Pratt, Alexis Jones
Keys Losses: Odyssey Sims, Jantel Lavender
Candace Parker will miss the first few weeks of the season after getting injured in the 1st preseason game of the year. The Ogumike sisters look to have a huge role while she is out, but it will be hard to play them when Parker comes back as she is the main option for LA. The key to LA’s success this year comes down to the guards, Gray, Beard, Ruffin-Pratt and Jones.
Las Vegas Aces
Key Additions: Liz Cambage, Jackie Young, Sugar Rodgers
Key Losses: Isabelle Harrison, Moriah Jefferson (wouldn’t call these key losses though)
Las Vegas made a trade for arguably the most dominate player in the WNBA for nothing. They return everyone from last years team and add Cambage down low. Oh and lets add in the fact that they had the number 1 over all pick in this past years draft. Cambage will join A’ja Wilson in the frontcourt, which will make a deadly 1-2 combo. The guards look to be Plum, McBride and Young. The Aces are solid all around and with the Cambage trade look to be title conditioners this year.
Key Additions: Odyssey Sims, Damiris Dantas, Karima Christmas-Kelly, Napheesa Collier (draft)
Key Losses: Lindsay Whalen (retire), Rebekkah Brunson , Maya Moore (personal), Alexis Jones
Minnesota is going to look very different this year. Losing a lot of key pieces from the WNBA championship team from 2 years ago. Sylvia Fowles is the big name that is back for the Lynx. Collier can do it all on the court, score, rebound and assist. Look for her to be a big key as a rookie this year for the Lynx. Sim will be a big help in the backcourt for the Lynx this year. Danielle Robinson and Seimone Augustus will be 2 ladies that are asked to step up this year for the Lynx.
Key Additions: None
Key Losses: Breanna Stewart (Injury)
The Storm are defending champs this year. Stewart tore her achilles while playing overseas and is out for the year. Not only that but Sue Bird has gone down with an injury and will be out for the first few weeks of the season. Jordin Canada will start for Bird and looks to be a great fantasy option to start the year. Seattle will rely on Howard, Clark and Langhorne down low. Don’t look for Seattle to contend this year with injuries to their 2 best players.
Key Additions: Essence Carson, Sophie Cunningham (draft)
The Mercury are another team that was hit with the injury bug to start the year. Diana Taurasi is out for the first 10-12 weeks to start the year. Brittney Griner and DeWanna Bonner look to lead the team in her absence. The Mercury are also a very thin team, so look for rookies Cunningham, Brianna Turner and Alanna Smith to play key roles early on in the year.
